How God Speaks: The Sufficiency of Scripture (II Timothy 3:16-17)
By: Pastor Chambers
Series: Sunday Evening
“And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” At the beginning of creation, God spoke, and God has continued speaking ever since. The Bible is a record of God’s communications to mankind and mankind’s responses to God’s speaking. God speaks, even if man does not always listen.
How God speaks to man today is a subject that is worth our consideration. How we live daily will be determined by our beliefs regarding how God speaks. Some believe that God still gives special revelation to individuals, just as He did to the prophets of old. Some believe God speaks to them personally, revealing plans and giving specific directions. Others believe that God is done speaking, and we must do our best with what we already know. Which view is correct?
The truth is found in a proper understanding of what God has already said. God has spoken, and His words for us were inspired and have been preserved for us today. It is true that God is still speaking today, but He is speaking to us through the pages of scripture. God does not use dreams and prophetic revelations as He did in the past because His written word has been completed, and it contains all the information that we need. Scripture is sufficient. We do not need further revelation from God. We need to immerse ourselves in the Word God has given so that we might walk in the light that it casts on our path.

May 7, 2023Two By Two Part 2By: Pastor ChambersSeries: Sunday EveningJesus did not attempt to proclaim the gospel to the world singlehandedly. Instead, He recruited others to spread the message of salvation. In Mark 6:7-13, we read of the first time Jesus officially commissioned His disciples to go out and preach. Notice first how Jesus called and commissioned the twelve disciples to go out as His representatives. They went out by the authority of Jesus. In so doing, they went out in total reliance on God for provision and success. Note how the disciples responded with obedience. “They went out and preached….” Some would receive the message they were to deliver, and some would reject it, but they were not responsible for the actions of others. They obeyed and their obedience would honor God. The content of their message was simple. People needed to change their minds about sin and their need for a Savior and turn to Christ. That is the message of repentance. It is the message that John the Baptist preached, that Jesus preached, and that all followers of Jesus should preach. We also see how God worked through them to confirm their message. God gave them miraculous abilities that proved that the gospel they preached was of God. While we do not have the same miraculous abilities today, we do have the same Holy Spirit working through us to confirm God’s word in the hearts of those who hear. Believers today are in a similar position to those apostles. We have been commissioned to go forth and preach the message of the gospel. We are not responsible for how people respond, but we will answer to God for our obedience. We go out by the authority of Jesus and preach, relying on God to work through us.

Feb 12, 2023The Courage of Revival Part 2By: Pastor ChambersSeries: Sunday EveningReading the history of the Jews in the Old Testament can be very frustrating because there are so many instances of repeated rebellion followed by the predictable outcome of God’s judgment. At some points, they experienced a genuine spiritual revival. One such revival took place under the leadership of king Asa in the southern kingdom of Judah. The story is recorded for us in 2 Chronicles 15. The condition of the nation prior to this revival was horrible. The country was “without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without law” and in trouble. God sent a prophet to warn and encourage the nation and the king. If they would repent and turn to God, He would deliver them from their hardship. To do that would require a tremendous amount of courage on the part of king Asa. He would have to take steps that might upset some people, even to the point of violent retribution. Had Asa been a coward, he would have allowed the people to keep doing what they were doing. Instead, “he took courage, and put away the abominable idols out of all the land of Judah and Benjamin.” He led the people to renew the altar to the Lord. They then restarted the practice of public assembly for instruction in the word of God, and there was a real affirmation of their commitment to follow the Lord. Make no mistake: it takes courage to admit that you are wrong, that your friends are wrong, or that your family is wrong. It takes even more courage to do something about it and make it right. But if revival is to take place in your life, you must be brave enough to deal with sin.
