What To Do
When Everything Is Going Wrong
Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.
From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee,
when my heart is overwhelmed:
lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
For thou hast been a shelter for me,
and a strong tower from the enemy.
I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever:
I will trust in the covert of thy wings.
Have you ever gone through a time when nothing seemed to be going your way? We’ve all had those bad weeks where the car breaks down, one of the kids gets sick, and the washing machine quits working. Sometimes you want to say to the world, “Give me a break!” This year has certainly been like that for many people. It seems that everything is going wrong. What are we supposed to do at times like this?
David had many times in his life when it seemed like everything was going wrong. One of those times was when his son Absalom led a rebellion against him. God told David that as part of the punishment for his sins of adultery and murder, his son would rise against him. When Absalom rebelled, David had to flee for his life. He went from being a king in a palace to being a fugitive in a desert. The fact that his son was the instigator of the rebellion made it that much worse.
David likely wrote Psalm 61 during this time. He was going through a time in his life when everything seemed to be going wrong. This Psalm reveals to us what did David did in response to the difficulties that were piling up. He prayed. It may seem too simple, but the truth is when everything seems to be going wrong, the best thing to do is to pray.
