His Name Shall Be Called…
Choosing a child’s name can be difficult sometimes, but it was not hard for Mary and Joseph to name baby Jesus. The angel had told them both what his name was to be. Jesus is the New Testament spelling of the Old Testament name Joshua. It literally means “Jehovah Saves.” How fitting that God the Son who came to “seek and to save that which is lost” should be called by that name.
But that is not the only name given to Jesus. There are dozens of names given to Him in the scripture. Take Isaiah 9:6 for instance.
Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
These names are more than just “nickname” because they reveal to us important information about God’s character. By learning more about what God calls Himself, we learn more about Who God is. And the more we know Him, the more we can love Him.
