God Gives the Increase
“I have planted, Apollos watered;
but God gave the increase.” (1 Corinthians 3:6)
In a commercial farming operation, there’s usually more than one person involved in the growing of the crops. One person might break the ground in the spring, another might plant, and still another might irrigate during the growing season. But the reality is that there is only one Person who can make a plant grow to maturity and that is God. We can put forth all the effort possible to have a good harvest, but if the Creator does not cause that plant to grow and bear fruit, our efforts are useless.
The same truth applies to the spiritual harvest. Believers have been commanded to go and preach the gospel and we should put forth all the effort possible to spread that life-giving message around. Sometimes we get to plant the seed by sharing the message with someone for the first time. At other times, we are watering the seed by sharing the same truths again, emphasizing their importance, and urging the unbeliever to be saved. But for all of our efforts, God alone is the one who regenerates the soul of a sinner when they believe. He is the one who gives the increase.
What is the logical conclusion of this truth? Since we cannot claim credit for the creation of new spiritual life, we should not receive the glory for it either. Only God deserves to be praised when a soul is saved. We must be obedient to do our part planting and watering the gospel seed, and when God blesses us to see someone saved, we must give God all the glory for it.
